All of Team North Jersey Judo did a great job today at the Tech Judo Tournament.  The results are below.  A big thanks to all the players today.  Sensei and the rest of the coaching staff at NJJ are very proud of you.  It’s not easy to compete.  I’m also very happy with the parents.  All did a super job supporting their kids.

A big thanks to Coach Greg and Aaron who helped coach all of our members from mat to mat.  It is controlled chaos out there and I can only be on so many mats at a time.  Way to go Coach Greg and Coach Aaron.

Good Bye But Never Forgotten **// Sensei Yonezuka //**

Judo In North Jersey

Judo In North Jersey

Well as all of you know last night we said good bye to Sensei Yonezuka.  I saw friends that I haven’t seen as long as 10 years and as far away as Japan that flew in to say their good byes as well.  Last night was very uplifting and it shows how many people Yone touched in a positive way.  We will miss him terribly and I wouldn’t be here today doing what I’m doing if it wasn’t for the example that Yone has given to a lot of instructors throughout his career in Judo and other Martial Arts.  The Great News is that the Cranford Judo Karate Center will go on and will be directed by his son Nick Yonezuka.  Nick has a great back ground in Judo and vast experience so I’m super excited for him and all the Cranford Judo members.  They have my full support and confidence.

Sensei Yonezuka’s tournament October 26 has been postponed to November 30th.  We will send a team from our dojo to compete and pay our respects.  The application link is below for Juniors and Seniors.

NJJ’s New Self Defense Class by Sensei Kevin Costello | Judo Training In North Jersey

Judo Training In North Jersey

We had a great training session last night for our New NJJ Self Defense Class.  The age group for this class is 15 years old and above.  Look at the testimonial we got from one of our former members Chris Lang for Judo Training In North Jersey.

Had an excellent Self Defense Class at North Jersey Judo last night.  Sensei Ramon Hernandez and Sensei Kevin Costello, are really onto something here.  Blending Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and Karate together to create a simple platform, using practical real world techniques.  Nothing fancy, and that is key to good Self Defense.  Got a good sweat going as well, not just standing around practicing slow moving forms.  Looking forward to the next class. – Chris Lang, Hopatcong, NJ

Judo Training In North Jersey

Again our New NJJ Self Defense training sessions will be held every Mondays & Wednesdays 7:30pm to 8:30pm at North Jersey Judo.  Anyone interested please reach out to me.  First training session can be done with just sweats and a t-shirt.  Call me for details as I’m pretty darn sure this class is going to be 20 strong soon!  Remember this class is all about drilling Self Defense using techniques from Judo, Jiu Jitsu & Kempo Karate but we are keeping out the sparing and replacing it with a cardio to help you burn off calories and make the FAT CRY in your body!  Call us at North Jersey Judo for Judo Training in North Jersey.

In all 600 plus competitors from US, Canada, Central & South American countries, Caribbean countries and also teams from Europe came together in Fort Lauderdale, FL to compete at what is the biggest Jr. Judo International Event in the US.  Ramon Hernandez Jr. entered the Semi-Finals against Daniel Shleyger a kid from Pennsylvania that has beaten him before but Ramon got ahead scoring a ¼ point on a Judo Takedown and kept the lead throughout the match and getting him into the finals against Jackson Butler from California that came away with the win in the end.

Judo In North Jersey

Our local kids did great and they had a great international Judo experience per Sensei Ramon Hernandez Head Instructor at North Jersey Judo.  Truth is we don’t worry too much about the winning or losing and our main focus is just on total improvement.  The player you really need to beat is yourself and improve on your personal best.  There’s no room for getting caught up on wins and losses.  William, Thomas, Ramon, Christian and the rest of Team North Jersey Judo will focus on a local tournament schedule in the fall to finish out the year.  To learn more about the NJJ Jr. Judo Team you can visit www.northjerseyjudo.com.

NJJ Member Becomes Dr. Brian Chen MD | Judo Training At North Jersey Judo

Judo Training At North Jersey Judo

Excited to announce that as of Monday, May 19, 2014 NJJ 3rd Degree Brown Belt Coach Brian Chen became Dr. Brian Chen.  Brian got his under graduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and then studied at UMDNJ to be a Doctor of Orthopedics.  Before his graduation Brian (I mean Dr. Chen) was traveling all over the east coast to find out where he would do his residency.  When traveling out to Ohio I told him I hope he fails the interview process there and that a hospital in New Jersey would pick him up.  I would say that to him as a complete joke and the truth is that it will hurt not only me but all of our teen and adult members to watch Brian leave.  He’s now heading to Pittsburgh, PA mid June and will be there for 5 years for his residency.

Judo Training At North Jersey Judo

What can I say about Dr. Chen is that he was and still is very focused on his goal which was to become a Doctor.  Judo was his second focus and I think more of a pleasant distraction while in MedSchool.  As I reflect on the past 4 years while Dr. Chen has been with us I’ll admit that I look up to him as a role model on how dedicated he was towards his future of becoming Brian Chen MD and never lost sight of it.  You never heard Dr. Chen complaining about school, all the reading and everything else that comes with his journey that got him this far.  No whining out of him about college tuition or all the hours he’s put in or how long it’s going to take him to pay off his school loans.  Eyes laser focused straight ahead at the goal line and the good Doctor kept the chains moving.  No crying just working.

Judo Training At North Jersey Judo

Here’s a big thanks to Dr, Brian Chen at showing us what good old fashion hard work and laser focus gets you.  I want to send out a big congratulations to him, his parents and his entire family.  I know they are proud of him like we are at North Jersey Judo.  We all wish Brian the best of luck in Pittsburgh, PA and we will miss you.  I know he will be back when he’s in NJ.

Sensei Tim Burklow Earns Bronze Medal At 2014 US Judo Nationals | Judo Training at North Jersey Judo

Judo Training at North Jersey Judo

May 2014 Sensei Tim Burklow earned a USA Judo Bronze Medal in the Masters Division in Reno, NV.  Tim just earned his Shodan/1st Degree Judo Black Belt in June 2013 and already trying to keep the ball rolling.  Sensei Tim is one of our senior members at North Jersey Judo and a great example of someone putting in the work and mapping out strategies and tactics along the way.  It’s about the journey!  That is our focus on Judo Training at North Jersey Judo.

Judo Training at North Jersey Judo

Prior to the trip out to Reno Sensei Tim pulled a hamstring and adjusted his training along the way to keep moving.  As I tell all NJJ members it’s important to focus on the work and keep moving.  Plan on total Judo improvement and don’t worry about winning or losing just focus on improving your Judo.  If you can look up then you can get up.  Our next tournament outing will be at the Summer Slam in Paterson, NJ June 1st.  We may have close to 20 members in competition on that day.  We are getting ready for it now.
