Excited to announce that as of Monday, May 19, 2014 NJJ 3rd Degree Brown Belt Coach Brian Chen became Dr. Brian Chen.  Brian got his under graduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and then studied at UMDNJ to be a Doctor of Orthopedics.  Before his graduation Brian (I mean Dr. Chen) was traveling all over the east coast to find out where he would do his residency.  When traveling out to Ohio I told him I hope he fails the interview process there and that a hospital in New Jersey would pick him up.  I would say that to him as a complete joke and the truth is that it will hurt not only me but all of our teen and adult members to watch Brian leave.  He’s now heading to Pittsburgh, PA mid June and will be there for 5 years for his residency.

What can I say about Dr. Chen is that he was and still is very focused on his goal which was to become a Doctor.  Judo was his second focus and I think more of a pleasant distraction while in MedSchool.  As I reflect on the past 4 years while Dr. Chen has been with us I’ll admit that I look up to him as a role model on how dedicated he was towards his future of becoming Brian Chen MD and never lost sight of it.  You never heard Dr. Chen complaining about school, all the reading and everything else that comes with his journey that got him this far.  No whining out of him about college tuition or all the hours he’s put in or how long it’s going to take him to pay off his school loans.  Eyes laser focused straight ahead at the goal line and the good Doctor kept the chains moving.  No crying just working.

Judo Training At North Jersey Judo

Here’s a big thanks to Dr, Brian Chen at showing us what good old fashion hard work and laser focus gets you.  I want to send out a big congratulations to him, his parents and his entire family.  I know they are proud of him like we are at North Jersey Judo.  We all wish Brian the best of luck in Pittsburgh, PA and we will miss you.  I know he will be back when he’s in NJ.

Judo Training at North Jersey Judo

May 2014 Sensei Tim Burklow earned a USA Judo Bronze Medal in the Masters Division in Reno, NV.  Tim just earned his Shodan/1st Degree Judo Black Belt in June 2013 and already trying to keep the ball rolling.  Sensei Tim is one of our senior members at North Jersey Judo and a great example of someone putting in the work and mapping out strategies and tactics along the way.  It’s about the journey!  That is our focus on Judo Training at North Jersey Judo.

Judo Training at North Jersey Judo

Prior to the trip out to Reno Sensei Tim pulled a hamstring and adjusted his training along the way to keep moving.  As I tell all NJJ members it’s important to focus on the work and keep moving.  Plan on total Judo improvement and don’t worry about winning or losing just focus on improving your Judo.  If you can look up then you can get up.  Our next tournament outing will be at the Summer Slam in Paterson, NJ June 1st.  We may have close to 20 members in competition on that day.  We are getting ready for it now.

North Jersey Judo Host Clinic w/4X US Judo Olympian & 2008 US Olympic Head Coach Jason Morris | Judo In North Jersey

Judo Training Pompton Plains, NJ

February 1, 2014 we hosted a clinic with 4X US Judo Olympian, 1992 US Judo Olympic Silver Medal winner and 2008 US Olympic Judo Coach Jason Morris from Glenville, NY.  Along with Team North Jersey Judo we also had members from Scranton MMA, New City Judo and Kokushi Judo in-house to enjoy the clinic.

Judo Training Pompton Plains, NJ

The focus of the clinic was mostly in Newaza (ground techniques).  He showed us two techniques on the ground both from a key lock on the wrist into two different turnovers.  The second technique used the same key lock into a familiar turn over we all do.  I think our Junior Judokas took well to the techniques and I enjoyed the Tachi Waza (standing technique) he showed which was a sticker foot swipe which opens up a lot of doors for other Judo takedowns.  In all I thought it was a great clinic.  Jason has a very high skill set and it’s good for our members and also expands my own Judo.

Judo Training Pompton Plains, NJ

Jason runs a competitive Judo Center in Glenville, NY and he has elite athletes from all over the nation that have relocated themselves to his area to train with him with a focus of taking their Judo to the next level.  Most of his elite team travel the world to compete in Judo Grand Prix, Grand Slams and World Cups in an effort to qualify for the next Olympic Games in Rio 2016.

Judo Clinic w/Ilias Iladis Olympic Judo Champion & 2X World Judo Champion | Judo In North Jersey

Judo In North Jersey

Team North Jersey Judo traveled up to the Jason Morris Judo Club November 10, 2013 to participate Ilias Iladis Judo Clinic.  Ilias Iladis is a 3X Judo Olympian, 2004 Olympic Champion, 2012 Olympic Bronze Medal Winner and a 2X World Champion.  We were met up there by our friends from Scranton MMA and enjoyed a great clinic.  Judo In North Jersey.

Iladis came across to be very personable, friendly and wanted to help everyone at the clinic.  Iladis showed some of his grip fighting secrets, displayed fantastic footwork and presented precision hip placement before his attack.  One of the better clinics I’ve been to.  Judo In North Jersey.

Iladis is from Greece and competes in Judo all over the world.  You can tell he puts in extra in being physically fit and puts in the cardio work needed to last all his matches and then some.  He took many questions and one that stuck out is that he’s focused on the next Senior Judo World Championship.   Judo In North Jersey.

Our next clinic will be at North Jersey Judo as we are hosting Nick Kossor from JMJC.  Nick is a fantastic Judo player trying to make to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.  The clinic will be held on November 30th.  We are inviting other clubs to be there.  For more information on Judo In North Jersey or North Jersey Judo please CLICK HERE.  We look forward to see you on the mat.

Be Significant And Success Is Part Of The Package! | Judo In North Jersey

Judo In North Jersey

For the next two weeks our kids will be going over the following at North Jersey Judo.  We always stay with a few techniques per class and don’t try to shower our members with a different technique every class.  The thought behind it is how can our members learn a throw or ground technique if I’m showing them something completely different the next class.  I’ll hang on to a certain set of techniques for some time before moving on.  During this time we will also go over the standing that I try to ingrain during our fit in sessions with our junior and senior Judokas.

Judo In North Jersey

PeeWees will do oGoshi (major hip throw) in Tachi Waza (standing techniques) and Kata Gatame (arm triangle).

Juniors will be doing Tomeonage (sacrifice circle throw) in Tachi Waza (standing techniques) and Tate Shiho Gatame (arm triangle turn over into mount).

Seniors will be doing Tomeonage (sacrifice cirle throw) & Hari Goshi (sweeping hip throw) in Tachi Waza (standing techniques) and Tate Shiho Gatame (arm triangle turn over into mount).

We will post another video in two weeks with these same techniques to show progress in our Judo.  Everyone practicing Judo or a Martial Art usually are always focused on advancement.  I always preach focus on Judo improvement and everything else will follow.  Be significant in your own Judo because when we focus on significance success is often part of the package.  A little teaching and preaching there but I couldn’t help it!

Team North Jersey Judo Competes @ Cranford Judo Tournament October 27, 2013 | Judo In North Jersey

Judo In North Jersey

At the Cranford Judo Dojo on October 27, 2013 Team North Jersey Judo attended the Cranford Judo Tournament hosted by one of my instructors Sensei Yoshisada Yonezuka.  Everyone affectionately calls him Yone.  Yone was the US Olympic Head Coach in 1992- Barcelona and 1988-Seoul Summer Games.  I started Judo with Yone in January of 1997 and earned the right to test for my 1st Judo Black Belt (Shodan) in August of 2000.  This tournament was actually my first Judo tournament experience.  Since I opened my dojo in 2006 we’ve made everyone of Yone’s Dojo Tournaments.  It’s a good experience for our new people and for others to shake off the rust before they take bigger steps at regional or national tournaments.

We had four NJJ competitors on the mat that day and all of them did very well.  Here are their names:

Casey Keegan won Silver Medal

Ailie Keegan won Silver Medal

Billy Horn won Bronze Medal

Thomas Benway won Bronze Medal

Judo In North Jersey

We had lots of high lights that day.  Ailie was out weighed by at least 10 pounds from both opponents.  You’ll see it from the photo we have of her getting her medal.  The match she lost which was to a green belt went all the way into over time.  After speaking with her and telling her how well she did Ailie told me she imagined herself at our dojo practicing with other NJJ Judokas.  It’s a great lesson of mind over matter.  She didn’t let her adrenaline get the better of her and put herself mentally in a great place.  I wasn’t the only one impressed with Ailie.  I had at least 5 people come to me and her to let her know how well she did.

Billy Horn made great strides that day as well getting an full point throw (Ippon) on an adult and also went the distance with another adult with a green belt who I know well.  Billy didn’t win that match but it went the distance.  That green belt scored on Billy with a ½ point throw (wazari) but the match wasn’t over.  Billy went after him hard until the last second.

Thomas Benway and Casey Keegan also did very well and I’m very happy at the strides they all made that day.  Out next Tournament Outing for Team North Jersey Judo will be the North Eastern Judo Championship being held at JFK High School in Paterson, NJ.  The date is December 8, 2013.  We will have a full tournament roster that day and it should be our biggest outing.

What Can We Barrow or Learn f/Others | Martial Arts In North Jersey

Martial Arts In North Jersey

Today’s post we are going to talk about barrowing.  I love to barrow and more importantly I love to learn.  No one is ever too old to learn and if you think you are do me a favor I invite you to stop reading NOW!  But if you’re not to old to learn then keep on reading.  I’ve trained in Judo for a long time.  It’s what gets me going and it’s what occupies a lot of space in my mind especially when I think about my continued growth in the sport which brings me back to barrowing.  I barrow a lot personally when I’m at a clinics and see and learn something I can pass along to our students at NJJ and I don’t discriminate who I barrow from.  I’ve been to clinics w/Judo World Champions, Judo Olympians,  and trained with a lot of good people.  I’ll barrow from BJJ, Wrestling heck I’ll even share something I’ve learn from reading something about Steve Jobs if I thought and believed it would make me a better Judoka and my team better competitors.   IT DOESN’T STOP!  IT NEVER STOPS!

Today I’m going to share with you a story about a Wrestler from Oak Park, IL that has a great story but a tough one as well.  There is a YouTube video below and I hope you take the time to watch it.  The Wrestler’s name is Mike Powell and he wrestled for Oak Park, IL, won a state championship, became an All American his freshman year in college and the only thing that stopped him from going to the Olympics was a bad knee.  Mike Powell went back to Oak Park, IL to coach his struggling high school wrestling team and has coached them to success at the state level.  The only bad news is that Mike Powell is dying but he doesn’t quit.  He keeps going and he wants his wrestlers to see that he’s not going to quit.  In the end he doesn’t want his team to perceive him as weak and learn a bad example.  Take a look at his video.

Martial Arts In North Jersey

What do I barrow or more importantly learn from Mike Powell?  I learned that I’ll never quit until they close the box on me and when they do I’ll be wearing a Judo gi on my way to that dirt nap.  That might be a little hard core for some of you and you may think I’m a nuts but I don’t care.  In Relentless Pursuit is the way to go and keeps you focused on that goal when the pain hits in.  Your pursuit of your dream has to be Relentless pursuit!  Wrestling Coach Mike Powell gets a NJJ Thumbs up from me.  I hope everyone enjoys this video like I did.
